Lauer is one of eight relatives who graduated from the prestigious Ohio-based John Carroll University. He is the son of Thomas and Mary Lauer and the younger brother of Mary. His father, Thomas Lauer, played baseball at John Carroll University in the late 1970s, just like Chet.
